strategies for finding patterns of disinvestment by comparing large data sets of street view images in high and low-income neighborhoods

Detail 2

If urban form affects social outcome, What characteristics of a neighborhood’s urban form predispose its residents to greater levels of policing and incarceration?

The Other Street View Is a searchable database of Google Street View Images  which correlates the built environment with the number of stop & frisks at each location. The database shows the extreme disenvestment that has taken place in the Brownsville neighborhood and begs the question of how investing in a neighborhood could decrease incarceration.

Computational methods were used on the data set to qualify and quantify patterns of investment and deinvestment such as the appearance of: powerlines, subway bridges, brick walls, glass facades, or trees. By sampling Street View Images from the geo-coordinates of Dollar Stores and Starbucks, these 2 sets of street images gave a clear image of how investment or lack of investment create cyclical environments of self-fulfilling prophecies.
